Sussex County Day and Champion of the Grill join forces on Sept. 17
FRANKFORD – Sussex County Day and Champion of the Grill will be together again – this time by choice, not chance – from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Frankford.
Last year, the two popular community festivals joined forces, but it wasn’t by choice. With weather causing the cancellation of the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce’s Sussex County Day twice, organization President Tammie Horsfield decided to combine it with the Chamber’s annual Champion of the Grill festival held each fall.
“Merging two events can be tricky,” she said. “Especially when it’s not what the original plan was. But the majority of participants and visitors really liked having one big celebration of Sussex County in one place.”
Horsfield added, “Our premiere sponsor, Newton Medical Center – Atlantic Health Systems, was very supportive of our decision to merge the festivals and that was a key factor.”
Numerous Newton Medical Center departments will be participating in the event, along with planned activities that include the landing and tours of the Atlantic Ambulance Air One medevac helicopter, the Sussex County Idol singing contest for kids K-12th grade, a grilling competition with cash prizes and free samples, a Chopped Sussex Challenge cooking contest and an apple pie contest, classic car show, scavenger hunt, and mini petting zoo.
TransOptions will be giving away children’s bike helmets for free, while supplies last, and the Wells Fargo stagecoach will be on display.
“We are honored to be the Platinum Sponsor for Sussex County Day for the second year in a row,” said Joe DiPaolo, president, Newton Medical Center. “At Newton Medical Center and Atlantic Health System as a whole, we are dedicated to building healthier communities by not only helping those within the hospital, but by extending our efforts into the community through various prevention and outreach programs. We look forward to showcasing our continued support to the community during this celebrated event as well as enjoying a festival that brings together family, friends and neighbors.”
Other event sponsors include Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Eastern Propane Corporation, Franklin Mutual Insurance Company, Cathy Kut – Realty Executives Exceptional Realtors, RoNetco Supermarkets Inc., Service Electric Cable TV, Sparta Township, WSUS 102.3 and WNNJ 103.7.
“There are many ways members of the community can get involved and we want them to,” said Horsfield. “There are opportunities to participate as a vendor, exhibitor or sponsor. If you like to cook, there’s the grilling competition or you can enter an apple pie in the Apple Pie Contest for a shot at the Best Apple Pie in Sussex County honor.”
