Fall Into Avon cancelled but merchant's association holding their own celebration with sales and …

AVON, Ohio – The Fall Into Avon event that included events for children and families has been cancelled. But area merchants are planning some retail therapy for the public.

The French Creek Foundation, whose slogan is, “Representing the French Creek District” issued the following statement on their web site:

“Unfortunately the Festival events French Creek Foundation has coordinated in the past (the Kids Pavilion, Pet Pavilion, and Classic Car Show) will not be part of the 2017 Fall Into Avon Festival. Over the next year, French Creek Foundation will seek to partner with new organizations to revamp and revitalize the Festival with new family-friendly events. We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2018 Fall Into Avon Festival.”

Clint Gault, president of the French Creek Foundation did not return calls for comment.

The French Creek Foundation was formed in 1993 as a non-profit, “dedicated to the development and revitalization of Avon’s French Creek District through improvement projects, special events, and beautification of public areas.”

French Creek merchants seem to be determined to give visitors a good time though, especially pertaining to their wallets. Sales and specials are planned by the French Creek Merchant’s Association (see list of association shops and restaurants below).

Members of the association were asked for their take on the cancellation and were hesitant to fully express their feelings, asking not to be identified. Their words included “disappointment” and “didn’t know it was happening” and “we used to have joint meetings”–referring to comments on a split between the two organizations. There was also concern about a lack of advance promotion but that “the event will continue as a merchant event as it started.”

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen said, “The French Creek Foundation handled the event. We supported it any way we could. (We were told) there was not enough manpower.” He added, “They didn’t come and ask us for anything. The foundation is not driving (the event) this year.”

Jensen also said he has hope for the event to be “bigger and better next year.”

Merchants have stepped up to kick the 4-day weekend into high gear though. Laurie Miles, owner of Details in Olde Avon Village, a gift store, said the association is sponsoring Beer, Beats and Eats from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, September 7.

“Enjoy live bands, local artists, delicious eats and beer samplings,” said Miles. Tickets for the samplings are $ 10 pre-pay or $ 15 the day of the event. Tickets can be obtained at the Treehouse Gallery or by calling 440-934-1636.

During the rest of the weekend, Miles said, look for sidewalk sales from Olde Avon Village merchants as well as other area merchants, but she noted hours of operation are at the discretion of each merchant.
