Jaguar Land Rover's electric future revealed

Jaguar I-Pace

Every new Jaguar and Land Rover launched from 2020 will be electric or hybrid, the UK’s biggest car maker has announced.

The first of the new models would be the 100% electric Jaguar I-Pace SUV, which goes on sale in 2018.

Speaking at Jaguar Land Rover’s inaugural Tech Fest In London, Chief Executive Dr Ralf Speth said: “Every new Jaguar Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving our customers even more choice.

“We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles.”

In July, Volvo said all its new models would have an electric motor from 2019. However, both Volvo and JLR will still be manufacturing earlier models that have internal combustion engines after those deadlines.

Jaguar E-Type Zero

Jaguar also unveiled an electric version of the classic Jaguar E-type concept car, known as the E-type Zero.

Based on a 1968 Series 1.5 Roadster and featuring a cutting-edge electric powertrain enabling it to reach 0-60mph in just 5.5sec, it’s been engineered by Jaguar Classic at the company’s new Classic Works in Warwickshire.

Tim Hannig, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: “E-type Zero combines the renowned E-type dynamic experience with enhanced performance through electrification. This unique combination creates a breathtaking driving sensation.

“Our aim with E-type Zero is to future-proof classic car ownership. We’re looking forward to the reaction of our clients as we investigate bringing this concept to market.”

Meanwhile, the Jaguar Future-Type offers a glimpse of Jaguar’s vision for the car of 2040 and beyond.

Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE concept

The fully autonomous virtual concept explores mobility for the connected world of tomorrow, where vehicles could be shared not owned.

At its heart is Sayer – “the intelligent steering wheel that will revolutionise the way you live your life”.

Named after Malcolm Sayer, designer of the E-type, this steering wheel doesn’t just stay in your car – it lives in your home and becomes your trusted companion.

Sayer is the first voice activated AI steering wheel that will be able to carry out hundreds of tasks. The advanced speech recognition software will allow it to answer your questions, connect you to the news, organise your travel and select your entertainment.
