Old Settler's Oktoberfest

PADDOCK LAKE — The seventh annual Old Settlers Oktoberfest in Paddock Lake will pay tribute to the event’s founding frau, the late Heidi Schuerstedt.

Schuerstedt, who owned Heidi’s Bakery in Paddock Lake, died June 1 after a short battle with leukemia and shy of fulfilling her goal to raise $ 100,000 for a band shell at Old Settlers Park.

“I promised her I would continue and make sure this band shell gets built,” said Rebecca Lancour, owner of Westosha Floral. “We are doing this in honor of Heidi. She was the most kind and generous person I ever met.”

Lancour said the annual event has raised just over $ 30,000 so far, thanks to Schuerstedt’s leadership.

“This festival was all her idea,” Lancour said, adding what started out to be a customer appreciation event grew into a full-fledged community event. “We had over 3,000 people our first year.”

This year’s festival, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, will feature a fun run, authentic German food and beverages, dancing, a classic car show, kids’ games, the Dachshund Dash, raffle prizes and a fireworks finale. Admission is free.

“This is a wonderful event for all of Kenosha County,” County Executive Jim Kreuser said. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate fall in the beautiful setting of Old Settlers Park.”

Lancour said the number of vendors has been increased, and organizers are expecting more than 300 cars in the car show.

She said the community has truly come together to make this a memorable tribute to Schuerstedt.

“We truly appreciate the support of the local businesses and our volunteers; they are what make our event possible,” said event organizer Rebecca Lancour.
